“Passion Prints” // Summit 1.1, Profile

The first two issues of Summit (1.0 & 1.1) were very “fly by the seat of your pants.” We used what was available to us. That meant that I did some of the fashion photography for a short profile on acclaimed local aloha wear designer Nakeʻu Awai. It also meant that we were relying on the kindness of friends to help us out, which is how my buddy Taylor Ho ended up as our model for the beautiful aloha shirt Nakeʻu lent us for the photoshoot.

Nakeʻu’s studio and shop is located in the Pālama neighborhood of Honolulu, an area with a lot of important Hawaiʻi history, and a unique feel even to this day. It’s not quite Kalihi, not quite Downtown, not quite Liliha & Nuʻuanu. This made it easy to justify our low-budget, semi-candid fashion shoot, which we elected to do on the streets of Pālama, within walking distance of Nakeʻu’s shop.
